Following an established format, a dive watch offers a casual but assertive design with a legible display of the time, robust construction, water resistance, a functional application of lume, and a bezel that allows for the tracking of elapsed time (be it bottom time or a pending pizza delivery). The other aspect of dive watches I enjoy, is that while the icons (your Submariners, Fifty Fathoms, Seamasters, and more) are quite expensive, you can get a truly excellent dive watch for under $500. Hell, if you haven’t had the pleasure of a simple Seiko diver, you can (and should) pick up an SKX007 for around $200. Taking that into consideration, I’d argue that the dive watch format still makes for an excellent every day watch, and while the much-loved Seiko offering is a bit large, and not exactly subtle in its styling, alternatives abound.
