Review: Bell and Ross BR03-94 RS17

Two months ago at Baselworld 2017, we quipped about how it felt like year 1957 instead, with most of the brands tapping onto their popular vintages to offer re-issues. In the case of Bell & Ross, apart from reviving their third generation of the vintage series, the brand took a bold step forward by breaking new grounds on their quintessential BR03-94 chronograph.

Just last year in February 2016, the brand made their debut into racing by joining the world of Formula 1 and becoming the official watch partner of Renault Sport F1 Team. With the clever use of contrasting primary colours inspired by the steering wheel of the new Renault RS17 F1 car, Bell & Ross introduced the new BR03-94 RS17 as part of a trilogy to celebrate this inaugural sponsorship.

Bell & Ross BR03-94 RS17
The minimalist Bauhaus-inspired design of the “circle within a square” watch case has always been iconic to Bell & Ross, resembling clocks in aircraft cockpits. These instrumental watches have been helping fighter pilots keep time since the brand’s inception in 1994. The right angles, clean lines and minimal ornamentation translate to immediate legibility in the timepiece. Hence the marrying of aviation and motorsport racing would not have come as a surprise even to the biggest Bell & Ross fans as extreme performance, speed and mechanical accuracy is of greatest importance in both fields.
We thought that the designers did well by presenting the square design in an adventurous and invigorating way this time for all the three watches in the trilogy. We had the BR03-94 RS17 Chronograph for a week and we put this watch through both the formal weekdays and the casual weekends to bring you this review as well as a pictorial treat on our Instagram page.

The case, dial and hands
The case of the watch is made from a special ceramic composite (Zirconium Oxide ZrO2 and Yttrium Oxide Y2O3) and the advantage is in its durability and toughness. Generally, there will be lesser scratches and minimal signs of wear and tear even from daily use over a long period of time on these ceramic cases.
The advantage of the ceramic case is in its durability and toughness.
The most interesting feature of the BR03-94 RS17 would be the sporty carbon-fiber dial as it clearly mimics the surface of the steering wheel. Even with a patterned dial, legibility is not compromised, thanks to the brilliantly raised metal indices filled with white Superluminova.

Shooting for the Stars
You know what? It has been entirely too long since we have talked about a watch that that purveyor of geekery – ThinkGeek – has had on offer. The last one was, I believe, a Star Trek one. Well, this time around, they’re still in the stars, with the Stargazer watch.
Now, if you ask me, stars and glow-in-the-dark just go together. Whether it be some of those first surreal experiences at the planetarium, or having glow-in-the-dark stars on the walls growing up, it’s something that just feels right to me. This Stargazer watch has an interesting way of going about it as well. You have the traditional lume showing up on the chapter ring (hour indices), and on the circular ends of the hands.
For the stars, you might expect more lume, but that could make for a mess when it comes to legibility. So, instead, what they did, was have a backlight built in (guessing it’s of the EL variety, ala Timex Indiglow) that lights up the star map on the dial. Is this anything that is going to help you navigate home by the stars? No, not really. It’s a gimmick, but it’s a clever one, and one I’m sure 10-year-old me would love playing with in the backyard on a summer night.

Sure, you might chew through those batteries in a hurry with that backlight, but this watch is – for me – the epitome of what I would consider a “just plain fun” watch.

Jaquet-Droz unveils new enameling paillonné collection – hands-on with live pics and pricing
On a mission to perpetuate rare artistic crafts, Métiers d’art and various sorts of enameling are familiar themes at Jaquet Droz. It has become a tradition for the brand to unveil exquisite paillonné enamel limited editions every year. This year, these are rendered in blue and red, one of the most delicate colors to work with. Paillonné enameling is an 18th century technique that was used by Pierre Jaquet-Droz himself. The new models are bringing together historic ‘paillons’ (tiny motifs or paillettes made from gold leaf) and modern elements.

A Look at the Ulysse Nardin Marine Grand Deck Tourbillon (video)
The 35th Annual America’s Cup gets underway tomorrow, after today’s delay due to exceptionally strong winds in Bermuda. It seems as fitting a time as any to take a look at one of the more exceptional and exclusive nautically-themed pieces recently released by Ulysse Nardin, the Grand Deck Tourbillon. Though the watch first debuted in 2016, UN rolled out a beautiful rose gold edition this year to join the white gold and platinum editions. The level of detail and micro-engineering in this watch is quite astounding really (hence the ultra-limited production and six-figure price tag), and I’m excited to share a closer look!

Well, in about a few days’ time, we would have just completed the first half of 2017.
For some, 2017 have been a good year. And what will be a better way than to reward yourself with an excellent timepiece, especially if you are a watch collector? In this week’s Throwback Sunday, we are looking at six watches that you can purchase to celebrate an achievement (or if you are just looking for an excuse to buy a timepiece).

We begin the article with a novelty from Baselworld 2017: the new Tudor Black Bay Steel and Gold.
In the recent years, Tudor had been aggressively marketing itself against many of the entry-level luxury brands. Its great designs, coupled with a solid movement and a reasonable price point, puts it ahead of many of its competitors. The new Black Bay Steel and Gold is no exception. The watch is a classic two-tone design, fits in nicely for collectors looking for something a little more luxurious and classy. The use of Tudor’s in-house MT5612 movement adds a nice touch as well, especially with its 70 hours power reserve and COSC-certified accuracy.
The watch is available in two different strap options – either in leather strap, or metal bracelet. Both comes with an additional fabric strap, with prices starting at CHF3,600 (approximately S$ 5,050) for the leather strap variant.
Omega Speedmaster Professional
The Omega Speedmaster Professional, otherwise also known as the “Moonwatch”.
The Omega Speedmaster Professional, also dubbed the “Moonwatch”, is one of the quintessential pieces in any watch collection. Launched in 1957, the chronograph is perhaps most known for being the first watch worn on the moon.
What makes the “Moonwatch” an iconic piece is not just its interesting provenance. It is the timeless design of the watch, as well as the excellent Lemania-based movement that powers the timepiece. The latest iteration, which features the Calibre 1861, is a manual-winding movement also boasts a decent power reserve of around 48 hours.
To many collectors, the Moonwatch is a classic. There aren’t many watches that look as good. The charming good looks withstanding the test of time, and still great after more than half a century), and can tell a story that is as intriguing as the Speedmaster. Besides that, the Moonwatch also reminds us of Man’s epic endeavours, and that we should always constantly strive to outdo ourselves.
