Rumours couldn’t be stopped, some people already knew what was coming: the Omega Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman”. The big questions were just: how will it look and when will it be released. This is it, the ST2 “Ultraman”. A design inspired by the 1967 Speedmaster “Ultraman” (We covered it here) .
Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman”
The ST2 Ultraman is a tribute to that 1967 watch, and especially to the key character in the Ultraman series. The first Speedy Tuesday edition was inspired by the original 1978 Project Alaska III watch that landed on our desk in 2012, with the stunning radial subdials. There, we also decided not to come with an exact replica but added a reverse panda for example, amongst some other details.

With this ST2 “Ultraman”, simply putting an orange hand on a Moonwatch would be little fun to do. We leave the original Speedmaster “Ultraman” alone. Instead, the Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman” comes with a number of playful features. Besides the famous orange central seconds hand, you will find more orange accents on the dial. The small squares above the hour markers, the ‘Speedmaster’ wording and the first three minute markers on the chronograph’s minute recorder. These three minutes refer to Ultraman as well, as he could only stay in superhero-mode for so long. Then, on the DON bezel, we find the ‘Tachymètre’ wording also in orange. The ST2 “Ultraman” comes with two straps, a NATO strap and a leather strap. Both black with orange accents.
More Features Of The ST2 “Ultraman”
The Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman” is based on the 42mm Moonwatch. Inside, you will find the trusty old hand-wound calibre 1861 movement. The crown that you use to wind it, however, is slightly different from the regular version. The fine teeth crown has the old Omega design logo on there.
On the dial, besides the orange accents mentioned above, you will find the applied Omega logo that was used in the past from 1957 to 1968 (145.022-68) and a step. This step dial is also a nod to the 1967 Ultraman model, as it was used in those years (the last reference to use this was the 145.022-71). Besides the large orange “Ultraman” hand, the small hand for the seconds is also a bit different than what you’re used to. A nod to Ultraman as well. When you will use a UV light on the ST2 “Ultraman”, you will discover there’s the orange silhouette of Ultraman’s profile. A UV lamp is provided with the watch.
The caseback is based on the original Moonwatch one, with the famous ‘Qualified by NASA….’ Engraving but also carries the Speedy Tuesday hashtag and the unique number of your watch.
The Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman” comes in a beautiful box, based on the hexagonal futuristic table used by Ultraman’s Monster Attack Team. In the box you will find the additional strap (black leather with orange stitching) and a tool that actually looks like Ultraman’s Beta Capsule that can be used to change straps. The other side of this tool is the UV lamp. Make sure to use that UV lamp to discover some surprises in the packaging.
Limited To 2012 Pieces
Just like the Speedy Tuesday watch from last year, this ST2 “Ultraman” will also be limited to 2012 pieces. About Speedy Tuesday
If you’re new to the Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday, 2012 refers to the year we started Speedy Tuesday. It was in Cannes where I was for a holiday, wearing my Speedmaster. I took a picture of this watch and put it on Facebook and wrote “It is Speedy Tuesday”, as it was a Tuesday. That simple. However, it inspired me to come up with a weekly recurring item on Fratello about Speedmaster watches. Besides editorial work and the #SpeedyTuesday hashtag that is being used on Instagram by many Speedmaster fans, we also started to organize Speedmaster events. Gatherings and events with Speedmaster collectors and enthusiasts, whether you have 40 different and exciting Speedmaster references or just 1 modern Speedmaster, you are always welcome to join these events. And to use the #SpeedyTuesday hashtag to show your Speedmaster, of course.
Speedy Tuesday Limited Editions
In 2016, I sat down with Mr. Aeschlimann (CEO of Omega) during one of their events, and we chatted about Speedy Tuesday. I then bluntly asked if we couldn’t do something together, to celebrate Speedy Tuesday, something like a dedicated Speedmaster. It was released January 2017 and sold to fans and collectors all over the world. Although reluctant at first, bringing another Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday was not something we thought about right away. The responses were so positive though, that we went forward with a Speedy Tuesday 2. We decided that if there’s going to be another Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday, it better be a nice one. Hence the Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 “Ultraman” you see here today, inspired by a wonderful story on the orange hand Speedmaster that was used by the Ultraman series: Return of Ultraman as it matched the suits of the heroic Monster Attack team. This watch was not specifically created for this series, but it drew the attention of the production team behind these series and they decided to make it part of the beast-battling kit of the Monster Attack Team in the Return Ultraman. In the meanwhile, these original orange hand 1967 Speedmasters have become highly sought-after collector’s piece from 1967. We feel honoured that we could work on this with Omega once more, creating a watch that we would definitely buy ourselves straight-away (quite an important ‘decisive’ factor for us).
