It’s not exactly breaking news that the U.S. government has been imposing trade restrictions and tariffs over the last few months, but today we caught wind of the first new regulation that appears to affect watches directly. According to a report from Reuters, the latest round of tariffs names the Apple Watch as one of the China-made goods that will see tariffs levied against it.
Right now you’re probably thinking “Wait, does this mean my iPhone and MacBook are also going to get more expensive?” and the answer is almost certainly “no.” Word is that Apple CEO Tim Cook has been assured by members of the current administration that the iPhone will be exempt from the new tariffs, despite logically falling in the tariff category of “data transmission machines.” Other devices that are named alongside the Apple Watch include fitness trackers made by companies such as Fitbit and wireless speakers from Sonos.
All of this comes with a major caveat though: this entire round of tariffs is currently under public comment period and won’t go into effect until this fall. So, for the next few weeks or months, companies, lobbying groups, and individuals have the ability to weigh in on the situation and to try to get the executive branch and/or U.S. Customs and Border Patrol to change the details of the new regulations.
We’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out, but the story is almost certainly far from over.
