Now headquarter in Biel/Bienne, Urban Jürgensen was originally founded by in Denmark around 1773 by its namesake family. In the year that the United States of America declared its independence, Urban Jürgensen was born in Copehnagen. In his early 20’s with his father the Court Horologist to Denmark’s King Fredrik VI, Urban Jürgensen travelled to Paris to study under Breguet. The year after this, he travelled to London to study with Arnold. Urban Jürgensen died in 1830 as an accomplished horoligist. His two sons Louis Urban and Jules continued the family company under its third generation. The company continued its innovative and reputable watchmaking as it passed through various shareholder structures up until 2014 when returned to Danish hands under private investor ownership. T he company went on to win the 2014 Men’s Watch Prize at the GPHG. It continues today with timeless, traditional watches that have their own distinctive style to them: “The Past is Always Present” is the underlying motto.
The company’s official headquarters is in Biel/Bienne Switzerland since May of this year, and the company has now introduced a a special edition timepiece in celebration of its new atelier. The Alfred, presumably named after last Jürgensen (Jacques Alfred died in 1912), is an exceptionally crafted watch that merits a closer look.
Urban Jürgensen “The Alfred” watch
42mm steel case with teardrop lugs, manual wind UJ P4 caliber, solid silver handmade Grenage dial, handmade hands in thermally blued steel, on brown calf leather strap with contrast stitching
The dial has a frosted pearl and unique silvered surface with superb depth and granularity, the result of a technique known as “grenage.”
And the hands — oh, the hands! Most watch hands today are designed and manufactured en masse industrially, with simple stamped shapes, perhaps folded in the center line to add some depth, or chemical bluing for color. Urban Jürgensen hands, to the contrary, are entirely handmade. They are individually honed, polished, assembled and thermally blued. Urban Jürgensen watch hands are astonishingly gorgeous, and perfected sized.
Like the watch hands, the signature teardrop lugs are individually forged an soldered to the watch case — again a level of craftsmanship separate and apart from industrial, mass quantity watches.
Inside is Urban Jürgensen’s P4 manual winding caliber (used in several UJ models). It has a Swiss Lever escapement at 3Hz, with stop seconds and a 72 hrs power reserve via two barrels.
The Alfred is exclusively available direct from Urban Jürgensen at 14,300 Euros, and comes with an invitation for an evening at the Atelier in Biel, Switzerland with Urban Jürgensen CEO, Soren Jenry Petersen to meet with the people behind the brand, the watchmakers and craftsmen that have spent months on bringing the timepiece to life (a special opportunity indeed!). Seems like a quite a bit for the money!
