In 2016, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Marine Collection, a Marine Chronograph incorporated an annual calendar for the first time. The watch embodied both Ulysse Nardin’s marine spirit and its ability to derive simplicity from otherwise complex mechanics. A mechanical annual calendar typically requires up to thirty components. But in pursuit of the principle of simplicity, Ulysse Nardin watchmakers managed to streamline the system to a mere 7 elements. This achievement celebrates the achievements of Ludwig Oechslin, the originator whose legacy is the quest for simplicity in even the most difficult complication.
This year the brand introduced a limited edition of the watch to commemorate its 9-year running sponsorship of the prestigious Monaco Yacht Show (the 2017 show concluded this past week). Only 100 pieces of this timepiece have been made. The white lacquered dial with its distinctive blue Roman numeral indexes and distinctive hands are all features previously used across Ulysse Nardin’s Marine collection, while the “Monaco 2017” inscription on the dial is obviously special. As well are the dates of the event (27, 28, 29, 30) and the month of September highlighted in blue, instead of black, on the date disc.
Ulysse Nardin Marin Chronometer Annual Calendar Monaco Special Edition – Perpetuelle
Limited edition 100 pieces (9900 CHF per)
43mm steel case, sapphire display back, fitted on rubber strap with folding clasp and titanium insert
The watch is powered by the UN-113 caliber, a movement with silicium escapement and balance-spring and made entirely in-house by Ulysse Nardin workshop. It enables the calendar date-setting both forwards and backwards – yet another simplification.
