Laurent Ferrier Galet Regulateur Singapore Edition
Laurent Ferrier, like many other craftsmanship-driven watch brands, is best described as a ‘hidden gem’. While largely unknown to the masses, the brand commands utmost respect from enthusiasts, collectors and industry peers alike. Laurent Ferrier is known for creating contemporary timepieces that are tempered with tradition, and the Galet Regulateur that was first introduced in June this year perfectly captures that concept. Earlier this month, Vanessa Monestel, Laurent Ferrier CEO, and Mr. Christian Ferrier were invited by DKSH and Mr. Ong Ban, CEO of Sincere Fine Watches to travel to Singapore and meet with watch collectors, enthusiasts and journalists. At the event, the new Galet Regulateur Singapore Edition was unveiled, with aesthetics that are sure to impress. Here, we bring you our thoughts on this special Galet Regulateur variant.
The case, dial, and hands
While we normally jump straight into case dimensions, the case of the Galet Regulateur deserves a brief prelude. The Montre École case that is used in the Galet Regulateur was first introduced earlier this year in the Galet Micro-Rotor “Montre École”, a simple three-hand timepiece. The term ‘Montre École’ literally translates to ‘School Watch’ in French. Every great watchmaker today was a green watchmaking student yesterday, learning and training diligently with overflowing aspiration. All this hard work in watchmaking school culminates in the creation of the ‘school watch’, a piece created by the student in order to graduate as a watchmaker. The three-piece case of the Galet Regulateur is modelled on Laurent Ferrier’s ‘school watch’ and is strongly inspired by the pocket watch design. The Montre École case measures a contemporary 40 mm in diameter and 10.95 mm in thickness. It is delightfully sensuous thanks in no small part to its broad, voluptuous bezel. The straight lugs, as well as the onion-style crown, give the timepiece an unmistakable charm. The entire case is polished and thus interacts spectacularly with incident light. The austerity of its design must not be confused with lack of craftsmanship; quite the contrary, the Montre École case is one of the most well-made, most evocative we’ve handled. The case metal chosen for the Singapore edition of the Galet Regulateur is red gold.
The time is displayed regulator-style (hence the name). In a regulator watch, the hour, minute and seconds hands are affixed to separate axes. The original intention for this type of display was to increase legibility and precision; for instance, regulator clocks were once crucial in watchmaking workshops, serving as a reference for time-setting. In the Galet Regulateur, the hours are displayed at 12 o’clock, the seconds at the classic 6 o’clock position, while the minutes are displayed centrally. To have the minute hand displayed most prominently (and not the hour or seconds hands) makes sense if you think about it – in our hectic lives, we often have the hour in the back of our mind and really […]

The Viribus Unitis A11 Watch is a brute of a watch with a historical flair. It is a 1000ft-rated diver in a polished stainless steel case, finished with a sapphire crystal, automatic movement, shine-through-dial lume, and solid linked stainless bracelet. If you can pull off this monster on your wrist, you’re in for a wild ride.
The A11 comes in a nifty “capsule-style” leather-like case – undo the magnetic buckle, and slide the watch holder out of the leather oblong tube. It’s a nifty packaging mechanism, and certainly a step up from the usual boring box.
The A11 Watch is beefy but refined. It has a definite weight to it, but it’s conical screw-down crown, unidirectional beel, and anchor-themed second hand give it a refined look. The blue gradient on the dial is a nice touch too. By far the standout thought, in my eyes, is the super cool A11 airplane artwork engraved on the caseback.
The watch came in great condition – polishing is excellent, dial looks great, and all markings are crisp and clear. I love the little anchor engraving on the crown and clasp, and compement on the sweeping second hand. The bezel has 120 clicks, which feels snappy and solid.
While the lume isn’t as super as I’ve seen on other pieces, it is certainly unique. It looks like there’s an entire sheet of lume behind the dial, which shines through cuts in the dial for the indices, numbers, etc. That’s a cool feature I haven’t seen on many watches before. Instead of being painted on the dial, it shines through. Nice.
On the wrist, the A11 has a certain strong elegance I like – its shiny stainless steel goes with anything you wear, and the blue dial is a compliment to the blue gradient on the face.
Viribus Unitis sticks with historical whispers with interesting altitude markings and a stencil font.
From the Virbus Unitis Website, here’s the history on the A11:
The respective inspiration for this watch model was the seaplane type OEFFAG Mickl H with the aircraft identification A11. The pilot of this aircraft was Gottfried Freiherr von Banfield, who on May 31, 1917, won the first air victory at night in the air war history. At 22:30 he forced an Italian seaplane near Miramare Castle (northern adriatic sea) to land.
This well-known Austrian seaplane, the blue bird, had originally fitted a 145hp Hiero engine and reached a speed of 155km/h. After changing the engine into a 200hp Hiero engine, the A11 reached 180km/h.
Armed with two machine guns, the rate of ascent was 3000m in just 19 minutes.
The A11 was delivered October 1916 and was flown by Lschlt Banfield until mid of 1918.
The seaplane was stationed at the Santa Catarine seaplane station in Pola (today’s Pula in Croatia), with the northern Adriatic operation area.

Vertex watches was “re-founded” by Don Cochrane of London, whose grandfather originally founded Vertex watches in the early 20th century. The brand’s rebirth indeed has a romantic twist, but the formula of bringing back a vintage timepiece is tried and true.

Science have been always of interest to mankind. Even as a child, we are constantly amazed by how matters can change its state, or how chemical reactions occur with a concoction. And the interest in science fiction stem directly from an extension of of science and creativity. With this in mind, we look at recommendations for a Sci-fi theme watch.
This fascination is not strangers to the world of horology. Highly-creative manufacturers, such as MB&F or URWERK, are known to produces watches that makes one wonder if it was taken straight out from the future. They are conversational, and they do add an interesting dimension to any watch collection.
There are definitely many watches that can be considered in today’s selection. It will be very subjective – considering how difficult will be to reach a consensus for such a controversial theme. But nonetheless, we feel that this is going to quite interesting. So, what are some of the hits, in our opinion? Let’s find out!
Devon Works Tread 1
We begin the article with an interesting but perhaps forgotten timepiece: the Devon Works Tread 1.
When the Tread 1 was first introduced in 2010, it certainly caught everyone by surprise. Never mind that it is a battery-operated timepiece; the Tread 1 was such a cool-looking timepiece that many people want to get their hands on one. The chunky timepiece was heavily inspired by industrialism and the steampunk movement, in which it is accentuated by the use of belts and steel in the design.
Driven by a series of motors and belts, the Tread 1 is a stunning sight to behold. It works similarly like a quartz watch, with the seconds belt “ticking” once every second. Additionally, whenever the belts move, it will produce a whizzing sound – which either gives a nice touch to this timepiece, or irritates the heck out of one. Mileage may differ.
Priced at US$ 15,000 (approximately S$ 20,476), the Devon Tread 1 is not inexpensive. However, this is a cool timepiece, and we highly recommend this to someone who is looking for an unusual timepiece.
Romain Jerome Spacecraft – Batman
In recent times, Romain Jerome has been known to produce interesting timepieces that play with our childhood memories. Games, such as Pacman, Pokemon, and Donkey Kong, and most recently Hello Kitty! certainly hold a special place in our hearts.
Besides those watches, another piece that caught our eyes was the Spacecraft. Launched in 2013, the Spacecraft certainly took a leaf out of the 1970s. Featuring a futuristic design, the watch is also intriguing in its complication. The timepiece combines four different complication: lateral and linear time display, jumping hours, and retrograde indicator. The end result is rather spectacular.
More recently, the brand launched a new variant of the Spacecraft. Termed the Batman, the watch is produced in collaboration between Romain Jerome and Warner Brothers (on behalf of DC Entertainment). The main difference for this piece would […]

I recently had a chance to wear Vario’s Eclipse watch on their Harris tweed strap. The watch is quartz, but with a reason to exist, where we might not normally want to pay attention to quartz. What if you had a quartz watch that beat convincingly like a classic mechanical slow-beat movement?
Vario brings an interesting quartz watch. The dial is simplified, with printed markers. The hour markers are longer than the minute track, lending a classic, tasteful early 60s look. The hands are simple, with beveled edges. The case itself has simple svelte lugs and a classic small crown. The lugs have lug holes in them, making strap changes easy. Are you getting it? Every choice here is a classic, vintage choice: lug holes, small crown, printed markers, hands with beveled edges, floating gently over a sun-ray dial.
The strap is also an instant classic. The straps for the Vario Eclipse are Harris tweed, finished with leather on the inside. The buckle is signed Vario. The straps are available in Ash, Coal, Cobalt, Lavender, Merlot, Peacock, and Pecan. Ash and Coal (grey and black) are particularly nice.
With the pyrite (silver) dial, and the Ash (grey) wool strap, the quartz watch is the picture of style. It’s sized in 38mm, and wears comfortably on my 6.5 inch wrist. The straps are a little short if you have a larger wrist, but they’re just so comfortable.
Why, you might ask, would I spend all this time on a quartz watch when there’s a perfectly good hand wound movement on offer from Vario? For this reason: the quartz movement is the Seiko VH31. It has the unique property of beating at 4Hz, or 4 ticks per second. If we’re talking oscillations per hour, it’s 14,400. This has the effect of making it look like a very precise slow-beat vintage watch. When you turn the crown clockwise, the hands move clockwise. This is the opposite of ETA movements, but does mirror some other classic movements. The hands are spaced evenly on the canon pinion. I want to see this movement in more watches.
The video explains a little more about how it works:
‹ ›
John and I regularly discuss how quartz movements with simplified dials don’t seem like a good use of effort or money. Except we were wrong. The best quartz movement for a vintage styled watch, lug holes like a vintage watch should have, housed in a 38mm case, topped with a domed crystal, and genuine Harris Tweed wool straps? For the $ 178 that’s asked, I just don’t see how you can go wrong.

Now this is my kind of collaboration. The new F.P. Journe Chronomètre Holland & Holland watch made in collaboration with the 182 year-old British gunmaker Holland & Holland. Holland & Holland makes handmade, bespoke guns for the upper crust — and by that I mean $ 100,000+ shotguns!!! But boy are these guns pretty and with hand craftstmanship that anyone can appreciate. They also make clothing and other select accessories, and oh, yeah — you can also get a “Holland & Holland” edition Range Rover.
The new F.P. Journe Chronomètre Holland & Holland features a unique dial made out of a piece of Damascus steel taken from a pair of antique Holland & Holland gun barrels…nice. The two barrels in fact date themselves back to the late 1800’s: Barrel No. 1382 from 1868 and Barrel No. 7183 from 1882.
The watch comes in a 39mm stainless steel case (unusual for F.P. Journe watches). Inside is Journe’s caliber 1304, made of red gold and immaculately finished including a special Holland & Holland baseplate engraving.
Only 66 pieces will be made. The F.P. Journe Chronomètre Holland & Holland is priced at 45,000 CHF.
