One of the most famous photographs of Steve Jobs is one taken in Jobs’s home in Woodside, California, in 1984, by photographer Norman Seeff. The image shows Jobs sitting on the floor with the very first Apple Macintosh computer perched on his lap. On his wrist is a small, unfussy, unobtrusive wristwatch made by Seiko, originally from the Seiko Chariot series. That actual watch sold at auction last year for $ 42,500 and we’ve just heard that Seiko will be re-issuing the watch as a limited edition exclusive to the Japanese domestic market, in partnership with Tokyo-based clothing designer and retailer Nano Universe.
Seeff would later say, of the shoot, “We were just sitting, talking about creativity and everyday stuff in his living room. I was beginning to build a level of intimacy with him, and then he rushed off, and came back in and plopped down in that pose. He spontaneously sat down with a Macintosh in his lap. I got the shot the first time. We did do a few more shots later on, and he even did a few yoga poses – he lifted his leg and put it over his shoulder – and I just thought we were two guys hanging out, chatting away, and enjoying the relationship. It wasn’t like there was a conceptualization here – this was completely off the cuff, spontaneity that we never thought would become a magazine image.”
Jobs’s watch is a simple, straightforward, instantly-legible design that serves up the time without fuss, and which has about as minimalist a footprint on the wrist as it could possibly have and still be a wristwatch at all.
The new version of the watch will come in two case sizes, 33mm (the diameter of the original) and 37.5mm, and will be offered with either a white or black dial. As you can see above, Jobs’s actual watch had the former. The case is made of black stainless steel, with a plain steel caseback, and inside is a simple three-hand quartz movement accurate to about +/- 15 seconds per month. The strap is a simple black calf leather strap with a plain pin buckle.
The white dial versions will be a limited edition of 1,982 pieces and the black dial versions will be a Nano Universe exclusive of 300 pieces. In both cases, they’re individually numbered on the steel casebacks. You can snag each for ¥20,000 (less than $ 180 at time of publishing), however the snag is they’ll only be available in Japan.
The series goes on sale March 10, and you can take a look at the presentation online from Seiko, right here.
