Introducing: The MB&F Legacy Machine LM2, Now In Titanium

The Legacy Machine 2 from MB&F was first launched in 2013 and has been released in red gold, white gold, and platinum. Today MB&F announced the latest iteration of the Legacy Machine 2: a grade 5 titanium-cased limited edition with a blue-green dial, in just 18 pieces.

The Legacy Machine series are MB&F’s interpretation of traditional haute horlogerie watchmaking codes, and the first – LM1 – was introduced in 2011. LM1 featured a movement developed by independent watchmakers Kari Voutilainen and Jean-François Mojon. LM1 has two independent time zone dials; LM2 features two independent balances, linked by a differential to produce a single averaged rate for the two balances. And LM101 is the simplest of the Legacy Machines, with a single balance suspended under a high-domed sapphire crystal under a double-arch balance cock. The Legacy Machine Perpetual Calendar is the most complex of the Legacy Machines, but all follow the same basic strategy of combining MB&F’s signature high-mech design with very traditional movement design and finish.

There are basically two types of dual balance watches. One type are resonance watches, in which the balances are arranged in such a way that a resonance effect occurs, and the two balances beat in synchrony (examples include the F. P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance, and the Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance Fire). The second type uses two balances, which are allowed to beat independently, and which are linked by a differential that produces a single averaged rate; examples include the Legacy Machine 2 and the Dufour Duality.

Technically speaking, the purpose of both arrangements, as originally conceived, was to improve accuracy. In the case of resonance watches, the rate stability of the two balances when in resonance is better than that of a single balance; in the case of watches with differentials, the idea is that positional variations of each individual balance will tend to cancel each other out.

Typically, resonance watches are basically two independent movements in a single case; dual balance watches with differentials have a single train from the mainspring barrel up to the differential, which divides power between the two regulating systems.

The architecture of the LM2 movement has a pleasing symmetry, prevented from feeling too static by the arrangement of the crown wheel and mainspring barrel and, of course, there’s a ton of razzle-dazzle courtesy of the movement architecture and extremely elaborate finish.
