It can get overwhelming to keep track of one hundred years of watches. But if you’re buying a Cartier—or any watch that fits tightly into the deep history of watchmaking—it’s interesting to understand what that history looks like. For Cartier, history starts at the beginning of the modern wrist watch, built for pioneering aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904.
The folks over at Invaluable have put together a nice infographic that charts the various family trees that make up the Cartier clan, including the Santos. Invaluable’s main business is running the online side of Sotheby’s and other auctioneers, but they also have a bit of a blog churning out some interesting material. Obviously, it’s intended to spur bidding on Invaluable’s main site, but whether or not you’re in the market for a Santos or a Tank it’s neat to see the evolution of this iconic brand. invaluable.com
