I mean, did you really think this list wasn’t going to include a Rolex Daytona? I’ve been on the record saying that I think Daytona madness is getting a bit out of hand, but when you see a watch like this it’s easy to understand why so many collectors go crazy for them. The “John Player Special” is a particularly desirable version of the ref. 6241, combining a solid gold case with a black acrylic bezel and a black dial with gold sub-registers. It’s tough for photos to do this watch justice though – it looks so damn good in the metal, with tons of warmth and gravity on the wrist. You don’t need to know anything about watches to know that this is something special.
For some context here, Phillips sold a John Player Special back in May at the Daytona Ultimatum sale and it pulled in a cool CHF 912,500. I’m not sure if that’s a reasonable bar to set for this watch, but it does include the Jubilee bracelet, which, for me, sends this watch to the next level. On top of that, the bracelet is stamped “Van Cleef & Arpels”; while Heritage can’t confirm, the lot description does state it is likely the watch was retailed new by Van Cleef & Arpels.
This lot could be a good thermometer for taking the temperature of the Daytona market early in the season.
This watch is Lot 54391 and bidding is currently at $350,000 at time of publishing.
