Technical Perspective: Clockmaker Rick Hale Debuts His Unique KL1 Wall Clock

The KL1 prominently features a grasshopper escapement, invented by British Clockmaker John Harrison (of marine chronometer fame) in the 18th century. As you can probably guess, the grasshopper escapement is named after its motion, which resembles the hopping insect. The escapement does not require lubrication, is very precise, but is difficult to construct and adjust, and was never widely adopted. The version in the KL1 is actually a flying grasshopper, as it is pivoted only on one side. This allows for a clear view of the escapement action as it locks and unlocks on the escape wheel. The pallets on Hale’s grasshopper escapement are made from two pieces of wood that are riveted together, so that the direction of the woodgrain (and therefore the strength) can be controlled.
