One million. Yep, that’s right. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) there were one million fake watches seized internationally, with an equal number of online advertisements for fake watches removed as well. We all know that the fake watch market is massive (along with similar markets for bags, shoes, belts, and other accessories), so it comes as no surprise that so many fake Rollies were seized. According to the article, in 2015, 80% of fake goods were found in Hong Kong and China, with Turkey being the number one purchasing source. Hmm, interesting.
You are probably wondering how this affects you, as we doubt too many HODINKEE readers purchase fake watches in any numbers, if at all. The selling of fake watches and goods has immense ramifications for all of us, as it involves things like forced child labor, organized crime, and even funding terrorism. There have been several reports that buying fake luxury goods funded the weapons used in the Charlie Hebdo attacks, for example. So next time you think about buying that fake Sub as a joke (or someone asks you, “what difference does it make to buy a fake?”) you may want to keep that in mind. The more you know, the more you know.
