HODINKEE Radio: The 2018 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève

As I write this, it’s the morning after the 2018 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), the most important awards ceremony in watches. This was my first year attending the ceremony itself, and I have to say it was quite the experience. Outside of the major trade shows it’s rare to see this many people from all corners of the watch world in the same place, and despite the competition at hand the overall atmosphere we very warm and community-minded. The cheers that went up from the crowd for certain winners had real warmth to them, and spending an evening celebrating all things watches was a great experience.

Having Jack here as a guide certainly didn’t hurt, since this is his second year on the GPHG jury and he’s a total pro by this point. We thought it would be fun to sit down just a few hours after the awards were handed out (you can see our recap of the winners here) to chat about his experience as a juror, how the GPHG works behind the scenes, the various winners, some controversies, and what the Grand Prix can tell us about the state of the watch industry more generally.

We hope you enjoy Episode 19 of HODINKEE Radio. Check out the show notes below and let us know what you think of this year’s GPHG results down in the comments below.
