HODINKEE Radio: Episode 14: Matt Scannell (Live In Los Angeles)

It’s a little tough to believe that it’s already been a month since we hosted our pop-up at the UTA Artist Space in Los Angeles. An important part of our time out west was recording the first two live episodes of HODINKEE Radio. You’ve already heard our conversation Spike Feresten, legendary comedian, car guy, and watch collector, as Episode 11, and if you haven’t, you should go back and check that out immediately. Today I’m super excited to share the second one.

Matt Scannell is the lead singer and guitar player of Vertical Horizon, a band that you’ve definitely heard before. If you turned on a radio at all between the years 1999 and 2001, even if just for a few seconds, you were almost certainly greeted by their #1 hit “Everything You Want.” If you so much as pretend you’re too cool to like that song, we’re going to have a fight on our hands – it rocks, straight up. Matt’s been a musician since he was a kid and he’s still making music with his band to this day. During our pop-up at the UTA Artist Space, he was kind enough to join Cara, James, and me in front of a live audience for a really fun conversation. We got Matt talking about selling CDs out of the back of his car, collecting everything from watches to guitars to Japanese denim, and his strict rules for watch collecting that he’s constantly breaking anyway.

Matt is one of those people who always has a big smile on his face and makes everyone around him smile too. He’s passionate, excitable, and even sings a few bars of a certain ’80s prog rock hit for Cara too – like I said, this is a fun one people.

We hope you enjoy Episode 14 of HODINKEE Radio. Check out the show notes below and let us know what you think in the comments.
