Here to spice things up ahead of Baselworld is the Baccarat and L’Epée Sun Clock, a new wall clock based on a vintage design. The first sun clock was designed by Georges Chevalier in 1948 for Baccarat and was re-introduced in 2014 for the 250th anniversary. Famously, one resided in the home of Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe in the late 1950s. This year the sun clock is back with 20k gold beams and it’s powered by the L’Epée 1839 movement.
Inspired by King Louis XIV, the sun king and lover of all things opulent, this limited edition wall clock measures 38 inches in diameter and weights a whopping 90 lbs. What makes up all that weight, you ask? Why, it’s the massive Baccarat crystals used for the sun beams that are trimmed in hand-applied 20k gold. The center of the dial is skeletonized, revealing the manually-wound L’Epée 1839 movement. Luckily, with a 25-day power reserve you won’t have to wind it too often. Everything is made in-house by L’Epée, with the exception of the jewels.
The Sun Clock is a great example of how Baccarat is still the oldest (and greatest) crystal manufacture in the world. Partnering up with L’Epée for the movement of the clock only gives this clock more credibility, with L’Epée’s reputation as a renowned clockmaker backing it up. You may remember L’Epée from one of its collaborations with MB&F, such as Arachnaphobia or Balthazar.
The Sun Clock is a limited edition of just 50 numbered pieces, and it’s priced at €100,000 (approximately $ 107,500 at time of publishing).
