News – It’s a wrap, that was Baselworld 2018

Last week on Tuesday afternoon the MONOCHROME team arrived in Basel and, as per usual, we came from various directions. Brice drove all the way from Tours, France, to Switzerland and picked up Xavier in Neuchatel on the way to Basel. Rebecca took a flight from Spain and Roberta flew in from the US to … Continued

Vintage Watch of the Week: Yellow Gold GMT-Master 6542

As many of you may already know, Rolex introduced their very first pilot watch in 1954 with the GMT-Master ref. 6542. The watch was built for Pan Am pilots to keep track of home time and local time simultaneously as they flew around the country and the world. But what you may not know is that alongside the famous inaugural stainless steel GMT-Master watches with the blue and red “Pepsi” Bakelite bezels, Rolex also made a handful of yellow gold GMT-Master ref. 6542 models. Super rare and super gorgeous, join us as we zero in on this uncommon vintage beauty.

This GMT-Master 6542 Shines Bright in Gold

There are so many fantastic details to highlight on this vintage GMT-Master ref. 6542, which on their own would already excite collectors, but taken all together, this watch is just downright impressive.

First up, unlike the more well-known stainless steel varieties, this GMT-Master 6542 is crafted in precious 18k yellow gold. That’s pretty special considering that the GMT-Master was developed as a tool watch. Second, we have the Bakelite bezel, flaunting a rich reddish brown color that complements the yellow gold case perfectly.

When Rolex first debuted the GMT-Master 6542, they used Bakelite material to fashion the bezels along with radium numerals floating inside. Unfortunately, Bakelite proved to be too brittle for the job and had a tendency to shatter.  Rolex quickly replaced them with aluminum bezels in future models.

So, not only is a GMT-Master with a Bakelite bezel already uncommon in today’s market, but one that’s brown rather than blue and red is almost unheard of. These would have had to survive over six decades of existence!

The Unique Dial Details of the Gold GMT-Master 6542

The chocolate brown dial of this yellow gold GMT-Master ref. 6542 carries on the warm colorway of the watch and houses the so-called “nipple dial” style. Not only are the faceted indexes also in yellow gold, but they are filled with luminescence too.

Of particular interest are the hands on this particular yellow gold GMT-Master ref. 6542. Instead of the Mercedes-style hands we are now accustomed to on the GMT-Master, this vintage version has alpha-style hour and minute hands with a line of luminescence running down the center. What’s more, the seconds hands does not include the typical round luminescent detail but instead, is simply straight. There’s also the long and slender extra GMT-hand tipped with a small luminescent triangle. Finally, we can’t forget about the date window at 3 o’clock and the Cyclops lens on the acrylic crystal.

What’s it Worth?

Rolex only produced the GMT-Master ref. 6542 for a short while from 1954 until 1959. As expected, these low production numbers make the demand for the first GMT-Master watch model even stronger. But throw in the rarity of a yellow gold version and you have one ultra-collectible vintage Rolex watch.

In 2010, Christie’s sold a similar example for about $ 160,000. Furthermore, in 2013, Sotheby’s sold one for $ 125,000, while in 2016, Phillips sold one for $ 350,000. What would you estimate this example of the vintage yellow gold GMT-Master ref. 6542 is worth today? Leave us your estimates in the comments section below.

New Release: The Oris Carl Brashear Diver gets upgraded to a Chronograph for Baselworld 2018

DEPLOYANT – Luxury watch reviews & horological lifestyles – Luxury watch reviews & horological lifestyles

Aligning with it’s philosophy, Oris introduces its second limited edition bronze watch made to remember the inspirational legacy of heroic US Navy Master Diver, Carl Brashear.

Like the first watch, a time-only piece, the Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition is based on the Oris Divers Sixty-Five and cast in bronze. The material was chosen again to represent the early diving equipment Brashear used, which was also made of bronze. And – parallel to Brashear, the natural warmth which bronze radiates makes it an appealing material for use in watches.

The Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition uses bronze throughout, for its case, bezel, crown and pushers. This is only the second time Oris has used it for the case of a wristwatch – the only other time being for the first limited edition made in Carl Brashear’s name. It’s ability to age naturally, subject to atmospheric moisture and the pH levels in the wearer’s perspiration, means that each of the 2,000 watches made will take on a unique look and be tailored to its wearer.

Inside the watch is Oris Calibre 771, a special movement with a two-counter chronograph and a formidable 48-hour power reserve. It’s based on Sellita’s SW 510 and appears in the Oris collection for the first time.

Oris has chosen a chronograph function for this special watch as a symbol of the number of times Carl Brashear was stopped by factors in his life he couldn’t control, and yet always got back up again. His mantra, often repeated during his lifetime, was: “It’s not a sin to get knocked down, it’s a sin to stay down.”

The dial’s balanced, symmetrical layout is known as ‘bicompax’ and gives the watch its classic chronograph look, which is further enhanced by the absence of a date indicator. The subdial at 3 o’clock is a 30-minute counter; the subdial at 9 o’clock a small seconds. The dial is blue, a handsome complement to the bronze case and a reminder of the deep water into which Brashear ventured so often and so bravely.

The watch comes on a vintage brown leather strap and has a Swiss retail price of CHF 4,700.

This is not the moose that bit your sister, once. This is the Karibu Original.

That title is lengthy, but I couldn’t shake it (and bonus internet points to you if you got the reference).  Today, we’re talking about another British brand that is popping out a watch ostensibly for travelers.  It’s got a steel case, a rubber strap, and even a quartz GMT complication.  Seems like it should be ready for globe-trotting adventures, no?  Let’s see what the Karibu Original has in store for you.

Up until the point last year when I reviewed the one from Archimede, I was surprised that no one had fit a GMT complication into a Flinger-Style pilot watch.  And you know, that’s what the Karibu Original is doing.  Sure, it’s not a “pure” Flieger, but it has the handset, the central circle, and the dotted triangle up at 12 o’clock – so it’s well enough to satisfy me.    And if you do a skim down the spec sheet (42mm steel case, 100m WR, sapphire crystal, 20mm lugs) there’s, frankly, a lot to like here.

Then again, watch folk might turn their nose up at the quartz movement inside (Swiss Ronda, for those keeping score at home).  For someone who’s heading out traveling, perhaps into some rougher terrain or riskier regions, I think the quartz fits.  It’ll stand up to shock a lot better than a mechanical, it’ll be more accurate (handy if you’re out for weeks at a time), and if something happens to it, you won’t be as heartbroken (current exchange rates put the Karibu Original at about $ 271).  So, yeah, this is a good adventure watch, I think.

In terms of fit on the wrist, the Karibu Original is a bigger 42, owing to that lug-to-lug.  It does taper in to that 20mm strap, so that tries to reduce some bulk on the wrist.  With the quartz movement, it’s certainly a lighter watch as well, so it is not anything that is going to weigh you down.  In other words, much like a majority of quartz watches, the Karibu Original is an inoffensive companion.

Where it shines above others (at least for me) is the inclusion of a date display (not color matched, though) and the GMT complication.  In our case, we were reviewing the stealth-out version of the Karibu Original, which is actually pretty fitting for a pilot-style watch, given the high contrast.  It does make the hands feel a touch too narrow (since the black edging blends into the dial), but they’re otherwise appropriately sized to the watch.  They all stretch to their given tracks, even the wireframe GMT hand, in this case color matched to the branding up at 12 o’clock.  So, yeah, there’s a lot done right here.

In terms of what could use some changeup, I’d say the date window on the Karibu Original is where things hit a slightly sour note.  For me, I wouldn’t have minded color matching, but the bigger issue (if you can call it that) is the placement.  It’s just a touch too in-board for my tastes, and makes you realize that the case is just a lot larger than the movement (and, I’m guessing, the stock date wheel).  Had things been compressed down to, say, 40mm, that placement would probably end up looking a lot better.

In my time with the Karibu Original, I wore it mostly around home, and to the office.  This really isn’t a dressy watch, but then again, it’s not intended for that. It really is more of an everyday sort of a watch, albeit one that wants you to head out on the road.  If you’re not a traveller, it’s still an able everyday companion, and will keep you on time and on schedule.  And should you travel, well, then the dual time zone will keep you coordinated.

Now, in my day to day, I’ve got some other, nicer, GMT options available to me, and I would likely end up opting for them over the Karibu Original.  However, if I was off on a longer trip – say backpacking around Europe for a month – then something like this watch (or, say, the version from Butler we reviewed) just makes good practical sense.  It’s affordable, durable, and reasonably robust.  And in the case of the Karibu Original, it’s available in a variety of color schemes, so you can coordinate it to your backpack.  Those are my thoughts on it.  If you disagree (or not!), feel free to comment below, or over in our Slack channel.  I’m curious to hear your thoughts on travel watches in general, and whether or not you feel the Karibu Original fits in that category for you.  karibuwatches.com
