Artya Watches For 2017 Continue To Celebrate Weird Art
Yvan Arpa is a watch industry soldier. In the almost 10 years I’ve known him, the projects and brands that he has worked with vary almost as much as the often crazy designs his own Artya brand is known for presenting.

Review: Konstantin Chaykin Joker
DEPLOYANT – Luxury watch reviews & horological lifestyles – Luxury watch reviews & horological lifestyles
At Baselworld 2017, as in any other years, plenty of watches were released for the joy of the public and happiness of the collectors. Just for refreshing the memory, we invite you to revisit our chief editor’s top 5 timepieces, his favourite independents’ wristwatches or the favourite picks of our colleague Frank. Between the exhibitioners, visitors and the multitude of watches and jewellery, there was one piece putting a smile on our faces – the Joker. The ‘look ma’, no hands” watch is an amusing appearance, but a serious approach to showing the time. Is Konstantin Chaykin’s joyful Joker a horological prank or an example of breaking the traditional rules of watchmaking, that must be seriously taken into account? We discover the Konstantin Chaykin Joker watch with the hope to find an answer to this question.
From Russia with Love
Konstantin Chaykin is not only an excellent watchmaker but also the President of Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants, AHCI. Born in 1975 in the Russian city Sankt Petersburg, Konstantin developed a fascination for watch movements. After repairing and restoring several clocks and watches, he started to think further and implement his own ideas in watchmaking. He built his first clock in 2003 and improved to the level where he creates the most complicated clock ever made in Russia. His portfolio contains high complexity watches like the Cinema (review forthcoming)- an intriguing wristwatch housing a nineteenth-century style mechanical cinematic animation or the magnificent Levitas with his magical floating hands. His watches and clocks have a touch of Russian heritage, a bit of “Russian blood and soul”. Those familiar with the Russian culture and literature will find his pieces rich, full of emotion and bursting with passion. His Carpe Diem (Latin: seize the moment) watch seems to be taken directly from the stories of Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. Seen just as horological pieces, Konstantin’s watches feature exceptionally beautiful cases and dials, complex and highly decorated movements.
Konstantin Chaykin’s Manufacture can be found in Moscow, where he and some other talented watchmakers are working to fulfil collectors’ dreams. As member and president of the AHCI, he is also supporting new talents in their start in the horological life.
Maybe the most unusual presence at the Baselworld 2017’s AHCI booth, Joker offers the best of characteristics of an independent timepiece: original and bold way of showing the time, excellent overall design and nicely done finishes.
Review: Konstantin Chaykin Joker
Joker is the latest wristwatch of the Russian watchmaker, and it was released in Baselworld this year. As all the other Konstantin Chaykin pieces, the watch is more than a watch, it has a deep symbolistic background. Joker is a reminder that life can change, like in a game of cards, in success or tragedy, just by a twist of a card but we have to take everything with a smile. In the end, a smile will not solve the problem but it will make it easier to approach. Coming back to a concrete world, we will analyse the watch purely by […]

Introducing the Archimede Pilot Chronograph TriKompax
If you’ve been reading us for a while, you probably think that I have a thing for the watches coming out of Pforzheim-based Archimede, and, you know what? You’d be right. Ickler does a great job with case design, and Archimede, in particular, seems to be riffing on the classic Flieger design in interesting ways. Last time, we were talking about a GMT complication from the brand, and now, we’ve got it coming in the guise of a tri-compax chronograph, hereby known as the Archimede Pilot Chronograph TriKompax.
So, I’ll give you three guesses as to what movement is in the Archimede Pilot Chronograph TriKompax, and the first two don’t count. While there are likely some other options out there, the one that comes to my mind (and likely many of yours) is the ETA 7750. I am by no means an expert on movements, but when it comes to chronograph complications, I don’t think you can go wrong with stuff from ETA. And, even not being particularly in to chronographs myself, I cannot help but to admire the beauty of those movements (shown here through an exhibition caseback, of course).
When you get to chronographs, particularly mechanical ones, cases tend to be a bit thicker, and the 42mm one of the Archimede Pilot Chronograph TriKompax is no exception, coming in at a respectable 13.6mm thick. AKA, if you’re used to how heavy-duty dive watches fit under your cuff, you’ll be prepared for a mechanical chronograph.
In terms of the dial of the Archimede Pilot Chronograph TriKompax, even with the three subdials (hence, tri-compax when you consider the layout), it remains quite legible. This is done with the white paint on the black dial. In fact, that’s the main color palette – monochrome – with the exception of the hands. Those, you see, are heat blued by Ickler, giving a small splash of color on the dial that is truly an accent, and not a distraction.
I also like the fact that there is a date display hiding on the dial down at the 6 o’clock position on the Archimede Pilot Chronograph TriKompax. And you know, kudos to the brand for doing it in a way that doesn’t impinge on the design of the sundial (no cut off numbers or indices) and still looks to have the date window at a decent size. Over on the side of the case, you have the defacto crown design for a Flieger, flanked by no-nonsense pushers for the chronograph aspects. In other words, thoroughly and thoughtfully utilitarian.
The Archimede Pilot Chronograph TriKompax is available now, and can be yours for about $ 2,400 (€2460, inclusive of VAT, for those in the EU). Perhaps not as immediately affordable as some other offerings we’ve looked at from Archimede, but surely not out of the realm of possibility when you consider watches powered by the 7750. Flieger purists may cry foul, but I like the addition, and frankly, it makes sense from an aviation standpoint. Whether or not you agree, let your opinion be heard in the comments below, or over in our Slack channel. archimede-watches.com

H. Moser & Cie. Returns To Its Origins with the Russian-Inspired Venturer XL Stoletniy Krasniy
Few might know but (the very) Swiss brand H. Moser & Cie, based in Neuhausen-am-Rheinfall near Schaffhausen, was not founded in “chocolate and watch Land“. In fact, its roots go back to another country, which as surprising as it is, is Russia. Indeed, Heinrich Moser founded his eponymous company in Saint Petersburg, in 1828. With these origins in mind, contemporary brand H. Moser & Cie. presents a Swiss-manufactured watch with Russian inspiration, the Venturer XL Stoletniy Krasniy (for Centennial Red, the iconic red of Russia).

7 Signs You’re A Hardcore Wrist Pervert
DEPLOYANT – Luxury watch reviews & horological lifestyles – Luxury watch reviews & horological lifestyles
Yes, you there. You know who you are.
You are that sick individual that just can’t keep focused in the boardroom. Sure, the executive who is lecturing the sales team about how hard we need to push sales because the monthly quota is declining might be important but to be honest, your eyes are drawn towards something else. That brushed steel bracelet that seems to pop in and out of his sleeve like a cautious prey, making certain that the coast is clear of predators. However in this case, you my friend may be a predator in disguise. Even from a fair distance you can hear the rhythmic tapping of his steel bracelet and the black resin of his cufflink clashing. You wonder to yourself, what is he wearing? It looks like a three link bracelet. Rolex? No wait? It’s actually a five link. Could it be that the boss is wearing a Grand Seiko? Suddenly, busted. He clicks at you, “Mate, my eyes are up here!” If the following seven signs are familiar to you, you my friend, are most likely a wrist pervert.
So without further ado, here is what we think:
1. When you are out in public, your eyes just cannot help but creepily suss out the wrists of unsuspecting victims… Oh, I mean people. Whether you are in the lift, waiting at the restaurant for your food to be served, browsing at the shopping mall, or even in the damn taxi checking out the cab driver. Wow, you really are a sick bastard!
2. When you see something interesting strapped around a wrist, but your 10 seconds of arousal is met with disappointment when it turns out to be a Fitbit. The horrors! As much as it pains me to say, not everyone likes wearing traditional watches, you know? Of course, not everyone loves wasting five minutes of their lives every morning to hear that sweet, tactile winding sound from the gears when setting the time.
When you start noticing that new girl in gym class and her… oh, wait a minute…
3. When you meet a self-proclaimed WIS (“Watch Idiot Savant”) and instead of being polite like your mother told you to, you ignore manners and skip small talk by initiating the conversation with the question, “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours?” Seriously folks, do not be this guy. At least tell them your name!
4. Sometimes it’s not other wrists that excite you, it’s your own. If this sounds familiar to you, then you are a special type of wrist pervert and probably the worst of them all. Not only do you enjoy undressing the sleeves of others with your eyes, you also like to do it to yourself you narcissistic freak. However this time, you can literally roll up your sleeves. What’s that? You’ve got a defensive argument? No, those are excuses and I bet they are something along the lines of the following: “But just look at the way the light plays with the […]

How to buy a vintage watch
I buy old cars, cameras and watches. I buy these things for the aesthetics, often for the value, and occasionally for the story behind them. Sometimes all three criteria converge like the time I bought Faith Hill’s 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser for a good price. At least I was told it was Faith’s.
Those who read about recent watch auctions and still don’t wear a watch, will not understand this story. That’s because buying vintage watches is not a spectator sport. You have to wear one. You have to love its age, its imperfections and you occasionally you have to get fooled.
Because of this, I will try to give you some of my general guidelines I use to browse and buy.
Know what you like.
This really is the most important point when you first start looking at old watches. Don’t let someone tell you what you should buy or like. Don’t be the person who buys a watch because you think you should have that brand and model.
I couldn’t stop looking at WW2 military watches when I first discovered the world of vintage. The military watches had incredible stories that were partially revealed by the engravings from previous owners.
What do you like? Consider the dial color, the case size, the case material and color or even the functions. Know what you like and your search becomes more productive.
Narrow your hunt to a specific area.
I’m not saying collect only one watch, but consider categories of interest to help you deepen your knowledge of watches. For instance, some enthusiasts only buy Seiko’s like the founder of WatchRecon.
Another approach would be to collect only watches with specific movements. Chronographs offer this options. The Valjoux movements are prolific and can be found in many brands, cases and dial designs. This collector has an incredible collection of jump hour watches from the 70s. Narrowing your approach allows your knowledge to grown deeper and not as wide. This will give you some anchor points to build onto your own research and shopping skills.
Know the market for what you like.
So, what is the market for vintage watches anyway and when does a watch become vintage? This is the fun part. Looking at the sold watches on eBay is a good place to start. Auction houses can also show you the very high end of what the market can tolerate. I can learn a lot about the retail prices of vintage watches by finding online retailers too. When you see what an online retailer is asking for a watch, just know that they didn’t pay that much for it. Use this information to help you know how to approach private sellers.
Know who will fix it when you need it repaired.
If you are trying to buy vintage watches, then consider knowing where you’ll take it to be repaired. A way to get a little more time out of your watch before a service is to buy one in the very best condition you can find and afford.
I remember taking two vintage watches into a jewelry store and wanting them fixed. One was a yard-sale-find and the other one was my dad’s watch he wore when I was a kid. Both watches could be repaired for more than they were both worth.
So, here’s a story I did a story about watchmakers. If you don’t want to use a certified watchmaker, consider sending a watch back to the manufacturer for a repair estimate. Swatch has a repair facility in the States for its brands like Hamilton, Longines, Omega, Rado, etc. Ultimately, one of the best resources would be a trusted friend referral based on their experience.
Learn, look, buy, sell and repeat.
Some of us have trusted retailers and friends who have vintage watches. This is great. Learn as much as you can from your friends by putting your hands on as many watches as you can. This tactile understanding will give you more confidence to buy online where case condition, weight and quality are only as good as the photograph.
eBay is the obvious place to look, but be cautious. Consider only buying from those you’ve interacted with and don’t be afraid to scrutinize their feedback. My kids have made fun of me and my early eBay watch buys. I’ve had the watches fall apart as I unwrap the package. This is the less desirable way to learn.
Here are some places to look and learn. Buy at your own risk and make sure you understand the return policy.
