We managed to catch up with Kikuo Ibe, the inventor of the Casio G-SHOCK when he was in Singapore recently, and talked about various things. Any discussion with a watch otaku will promise to be entertaining, and this one with the Chief Otaku of G-SHOCK does not disappoint. Key takeaways here.
He was fun to talk to, relaxed, and candid. Though we have seen him making presentations in English to good effect, he was more comfortable taking questions and answering them in Japanese, and during our short discussion, we had an interpreter.
We will not go into the invention of the G-SHOCK, that story has been covered in various media. The official version is found on this link.
Kikuo Ibe and Reddit AMA
Hanging out and talking tech is what nerds love doing best, and despite being a world famous character and an idol to many for inventing the extremely popular G=SHOCK, Ibe-san found time to do a Ask Me Anything session on Reddit 4 years ago, for the G-SHOCK 30th Anniversary. Here is the link to the AMA, which we found to be very interesting.

G-SHOCK Development: what’s next?
We talked about the continued development of the G-SHOCK, from the original intended market for the use by construction workers to the eventual fashion icon a decade later. This development as a fashion accessory was completely unintentional, and the opened the world of colours, and designs. The watches remained large, tough, and incorporate as much technology as is possible. New innovations included the use of solar power, the addition of sensors like barometers, altitude sensors, GPS.
But the original Gravitational Shock (G-SHOCK) system remained largely unchanged. The core engine where the original ideas were expressed have remained. The only adaptation is the use of newer and better technology in elastomers and plastics which have been gradually introduced.
Relaxed and chatty, and very candid, Ibe-san was a model otaku.
Will it break?
We participated in the G-SHOCK Absolute Toughness test and subjected the watch to rather extreme measures. Here is our video report. During the test, when the car rolled over the G-SHOCK, the bracelet broke. We asked Ibe-san why. And indeed there was an interesting explanation.
“It is easy to make the bracelet from a material and construction which is unbreakable.”, he says. But as the original intent of the G-SHOCK was for construction use, an unbreakable bracelet might be a safety concern. If the watch is caught in a bit of machinery, and the bracelet is unbreakable, it will hurl the wearer toward the machinery, possibly endangering his life. “So, I designed the bracelet to come apart under a certain force,” Ibe-san continued, “so instead of the wearer’s arm being ripped off, the bracelet gives way.”
Always with his signature Casio G=SHOCK DW5600 in white on his wrist.
What about Connected and Smart Watches?
Of course, Casio is a player in the connected watch arena. Their Pro Trek range offers interesting connectivity and options. And to his […]

Tutima has a long and prestigious history; the origins of the brand go as far back as the 1920s and 1930s in Glasshütte, when Tutima was the quality label of the UROFA-UFAG group. After the fall of the Berlin wall, several watchmakers looked at reviving the Saxon watchmaking tradition and the ‘made in Germany’ trademark, specifically in Glasshütte. Among them was Dieter Delecate, owner and CEO of Tutima, then headquarted in the north of Germany, near Bremen.

Zenith turns the page on a new chapter in the history of the Swiss watch industry with the introduction of a new oscillating system it touts as “the first and only mechanical watch embodying both an evolution and an improvement of the sprung balance principle presented in January 1675.” Down the road man years looking back, this development may be viewed on par with Zenith’s 1969 introduction of the Swiss watch industry’s first ever automatic chronograph, the El Primero. How’s that for hyperbole?! For now, such a notion is merely just that but suffice it to say this is certainly a big deal for Zenith and everyone there who has been working on this new innovation.
Let’s take a look now at the result: the Defy Lab watch with its new oscillator.

The story of Patek Philippe
Man’s dabbling into portable mechanical timepieces began about 500 years ago. With Patek Philippe having just celebrated its 175th anniversary three years ago, doing the math reveals that the illustrious Genevan watch manufacturer has co-written a third of its intriguing history. While indeed there are many brands that claim to be older, most of them had discontinued their activities in the course of time and were reestablished by completely foreign people at a much later date. Conversely, Patek Philippe has endeavoured without interruption since its inception on 1 May 1839 and has always been privately owned. Today, it is widely viewed as one of haute horlogerie‘s most prestigious names and a leading manufacturer of fine mechanical timepieces.
This is the story of a manufacture that was born from the fascinations of a Polish immigrant; the story of a manufacture that has endured trials and tribulations and – in spite of all that – stayed true to its ethos.
This is the story of Patek Philippe.
Antoine Norbert de Patek
Antoine Norbert de Patek was born in Poland in 1812 and grew up in testing times. At the age of 16, he joined the Polish 1st Mounted Rifles Regiment and fought in the Polish-Russian War, also known as the November Uprising (1830-1831). In 1831, he received the Virtuti Militari, Poland’s highest military decoration for acts of heroism (similar to the American Medal of Honor). Later in that year, the Polish uprising against Russian occupational forces was crushed, forcing Patek and his fellow soldiers to embark on the ‘Great Emigration’ toward Western Europe. Patek had initially settled in France though he was later forced to resettle in Switzerland after an unfavourable decree was issued by the French government (under pressure from the Russian embassy).
Antoine Norbert de Patek
It was in Geneva, Switzerland that he became fascinated by the city’s watchmaking heritage and the complementary artistry of engravers, enamellers, and jewellers. As a refugee, Patek sought the company of immigrants and became acquainted with François Czapek, a Polish watchmaker of Czech descent. On the 1st of May 1839, Patek along with Czapek and Thomas Moreau (his wife’s uncle) formed Patek, Czapek & Cie – Fabricants à Genève; little did Patek know that this was the beginning of a lasting legacy.
The company was successful from the beginning, but increasing discord between Patek and Czapek inevitably meant that the two men eventually had to part ways. On a lookout for a new partner, Patek met gifted French watchmaker Jean Adrien Philippe at the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 in Paris.
Jean Adrien Philippe
It was at the exhibition that Philippe’s patented invention, a mechanism for winding a movement and setting the hands without requiring a separate key, was awarded a Gold Medal. Naturally, this caught Patek’s eye. A year later, Patek terminated his partnership with Czapek and together with Jean Adrien Philipppe and Vincent Gostkowski, a third partner, established a new company under the name Patek & Cie – Fabricants à Genève. In 1851, the company was renamed Patek, Philippe & Cie. […]

Dive watches are a favored creation of the indie crowd, and for good reason. For starters, they’re always a popular design. Even for people who do not dive (such as myself), there’s something about the idea that the watch can handle more than I’d reasonably throw at it is compelling. Then again, the looks of the watch have a large part to play, and dive watches have some classic cues that appeal as well. One of the more recent entries into the dive watch segment is the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver.
Before I ran across the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver on Instagram I had not heard of the brand. From what I was seeing in the photos there, I felt there was something worth checking out in person (that blue dial didn’t hurt, either). I reached out to the brand, and even though the watch is actually sold out (more on that later) I was able to spend some time with the watch.
The first thing that struck me on the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver – and likely will for most folks – is the size. Now, sure, a 44mm case (15mm thick) is not out of the realm of the ordinary for independent dive watches. Perhaps it’s just my own movement away from reviewing them as much (not a conscious decision, it just worked out that way), the size becomes a bit more of a shock to the wrist, I guess. Then again, when you get into those bigger cases, you can do other things.
For starters, the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver carries a 300m WR rating. While 100m will be reasonable for most folks, the extra couple hundred meters nets you a bit more peace of mind. Next up is the shock resistance rating, which in this case is 6000G. Prior to this, the highest rating I’ve seen on a watch that I’ve reviewed has been 5000G (most of theBallwatches carry this level of protection). Some of this, no doubt, comes from the steel. More importantly, though, is the movement the steel is surrounding.
For the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver, they’ve used a modified Seiko 4R36b movement to help net that protection from bumps, bangs, and drops. While I’m not movement expert (that would be Victor, for those keeping score at home), this level of protection along with an accuracy of +/- 5 seconds per day (in three positions), well, that just seems like a good movement to have on the wrist. And it’s not like Seiko is unknown for competent, reliable tick-tocks.
Let’s move on to the aesthetics of the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver. As I suspected from the photos, I did really dig the deep blue dial the watch has. Stacked on top of that you’ve you the internal counter bezel, something we’d be more used to seeing on a dual-crown watch. Here, the ring is locked in place. What isn’t locked in place is that coin-edge bezel. That’s actually a 120-click uni-directional bezel, along with the lume pip (which you’d then align to the minutes on the chapter ring). This mixes things up a bit, and I think the bezel design works well for us desk diver types.
Under the thick domed sapphire crystal of the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver, you’ve got some thickly applied lume, with numerals and indices that stand out nicely against the dark dial. The hands are also lumed, of course, and they contain another design surprise. When you first look at them, they look almost like arrows, or perhaps stacked triangles. This is just a matter of how the hands are painted. Nearer to the pinion, they’re outlined in black, and then they transition to another color – white on the hour hand, and the oh-so-dive-watch orange on the minute hand. It’s an interesting look, and one I’m surprised I’ve not seen more of in the past.
Now, when I started talking about the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver, I mentioned that the $ 999 watch is sold out. That’s true, at least direct from the brand. They do have a partner on Amazon that has some in stock for $ 949. However, lucky reader that you are, you can use the coupon code OCEAN201 (which is valid until October 28) to drop that price down to $ 711. If you want to pick one up, and miss out on that remaining stock, just be patient. We’ve gotten word that the brand will be introducing three new dial designs in this case at the end of October.
And with that, we’ll wrap things up with our review of the Ocean Crawler Champion Diver. It has a design that mixes things up a bit will still retaining classic dive watch cues, and brings a movement into the mix we do not commonly see from independent brands. It is a big watch, so it may overpower smaller wrists, but on either the included rubber or leather straps, it will be a bold everyday sort of a companion. oceancrawler.com
