A. Lange 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst (video)

German watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne has unveiled a Handwerkskunst version of its 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar, limited to just 20 pieces.  The Handwerkskunst (ie craftsmanship) title is one that is bestowed on very few of A. Lange’s pieces and thus this label alone says a lot about the special nature of this watch.

Already an impressive watch in its own right, this “Handwerkskunst” version of Lange’s 1815 Rattrapante (split second) perpetual calendar is as about lavish as it gets, featuring a stellar combination of enamelling and engraving.

A. Lange 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst

Limited edition 20 pieces, €290,000 per

41.9mm x 15.8mm white gold case

No expense spared

It boasts a rare combination of functionality and craftsmanship:  split seconds chronograph, perpetual calendar, moon phase and power reserve indicator, made even better with a relief-engraved dial covered in translucent enamel (I’ve discussed the champleve technique extensively here), and subtle blue accents which match the motif.  The hands are white gold save for the minute counter which is in blued steel and the rattrapante hands which are also steel.

The 631-part L101.1 caliber is vast in its depth and beauty and constructed in a manner that only A. Lange can do — with special decoration for this handwerkskunst edition.

But to observe it, one first gets admire the hinged caseback with lavish decoration – the Roman moon goddess Luna, engraved and sitting atop a blue ring of champleve enamel that matches the dial.

hand-wound with a 42-hour power reserve, engraved stars and tremblage engraving as with the dial and case:

Does it get any better?

The A. Lange 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst is priced at €290,000 and is a limited edition of just 20 pieces. For more, visit A. Lange & Söhne online.

Throwback Sundays: Six Watch Recommendations for a Boys Night Out, from Our Archives

DEPLOYANT – Luxury watch reviews & horological lifestyles – Luxury watch reviews & horological lifestyles

As the guys generally grow older, one of the things that we really look forward to is a great boys’ night out. Well, as the old adage goes: work hard, and play harder. After prolonged hours of working hard, we definitely need to take a time out.

A typical boys’ night out usually happens at a drinking place. It can be a local pub, a nice bar, or even a glitzy club. Of course, different location usually meant different outfits. And that, preferably, meant a different watch to match as well.

So, what are some of the suitable watches that we think are excellent for a boys’ night out? Let find out!

SEVENFRIDAY S-series

The new SEVENFRIDAY S-series. A fun, yet affordable timepiece.

First up, we have the funky S-series, from the highly successful SEVENFRIDAY.

Since its inception back in 2012, SEVENFRIDAY had acquired a reputation for producing well-designed watches with a reasonable price-point. The rounded square cases, together with its signature industrial-inspired design, had garnered a fair share of following throughout the last 5 years.

While SEVENFRIDAY explored different design styles with the V-series and Q-series, many collectors seem to prefer the aesthetics of the original P-series. This lead the brand to produce the S-series, which we are recommending. Essentially an evolution from the original series of watches with notable differences in the addition of an animation ring and crown guard, as well as a re-worked dial.

The timepiece is powered by Miyota’s 82S5. It is an automatic movement, featuring a power reserve of around 40 hours. It is also fitted with a NFC chip, which allows the owner to check for the authenticity of the watch, and other value add services SEVENFRIDAY will announce in due course. The 47mm timepiece is priced at S$ 1,915, and we feel that this is a great timepiece for something fun on a boys’ night out.

NOMOS Aqua Ahoi Datum

The NOMOS Ahoi Datum Atlantik. An interesting choice of colour scheme, which adds a great touch to the watch.

Over the last few years, NOMOS have generated quite a fair bit of interest in the watch collecting community. Collectors have started to notice this Glashutte-based watch manufacturer, who produces in-house manufactured watches at a reasonable price point.

The Aqua Ahoi Datum is one of the latest prices to join the remarkable collection. Featuring its signature Bauhaus-inspired design, the Aqua Ahoi Datum looks simple and minimalist. There are three different dial variations for the watch: white, dark blue, and light blue. Our favourite is the Ahoi Atlantik, which features the dark blue dial. We think that the colour pairs very well with the cream numerals and indices.

The 40.3mm timepiece is powered by NOMOS’s in-house DUW5101. This is an automatic movement, which comes with NOMOS Swing System. The additional function of the watch includes a date indicator, and it boasts a decent power reserve of around 42 hours. It is also worthy to note that the movement’s finishing is done rather nicely as well.

The Ahoi Atlantik Datum is priced at S$ 6,010. We foresee that its simple and […]

Mont Royal offers Kickstarter’d “Smart Luxury” in two flavors

Kickstarter-funded watches – there seem to be a ton of them these days, in every variety of complications, price points, and vibes. Mont Royal shows up to the scene with two collections funding at the same time – both slick and minimal designs, with classic and interesting details that make them potentially worth a second look.

Chronograph One

The Chronograph One series features a 43mm case, Miyota 6S10 chronograph quartz movement, a range of straps including deployment buckle, and a couple dial colors. I love the combinations presented, and the silver/charcoal/grey with the metal bracelet looks especially handsome. Slick good looks that can skate by with a suit, and really shine on the weekends and during outings and parties.

Classic Chic

Classic Chic series certainly is chic. The faces are minimally styled with thin hands and that stylish Mont Royal logo, with the preportions of the face vs adornemtns giving it a bold, outgoing look. Again, I love the bands, and the silver/charcoal/grey with milanese strap jumps out at me immediately. Maybe I’m in a medal band trend nowadays.. but I just love that black face and stainless steel. Modern, understated, sophisticated.

Standout Features

  • Quick Release Straps – How convenient! Little palls on the springbars of the straps let you change these straps without a change tool, making it super easy. I’ve been seeing these releases more and more lately, and I love it. Especially with this line of watches, which has so many strap options.
  • Domed Sapphire – the curved surface makes for interesting reflections, and although it’s a little more wear prone, it’s sapphire so unlikely to really scratch. I’d be interested to see what the interface between the sapphire and the case looks like – such a small detail, but so critical.
  • Shiny! Based on press pics, this thing looks polished to the max all over – no shiny/matte contrasts.. both of these watches shine all the way around.
  • Solid terminations on the milanese strap – instead of ending with a singed/melted off strap, it looks like Mont Royal goes the extra step (or their supplier does) and puts a little solid metal bar on the end of the strap – nice.

Mont Royal is currently funding on Kickstarter – check them out and lend your support.
