One of The Most Sought After Watches In The World Discovered!
Wow and wow. Paul Newman’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref 6239, a gift that his wife, Joanne Woodward, had engraved with “Drive Carefully Me” on the back, has been the source of mystery as watch collectors around the world wondered what happened to it and whether it would ever come up for auction. Now we know. Credit to long time watch journalist and watch book author Michael Clerizo for laying it out in his fantastic story in the June 3, 2017 edition of WSJ. Magazine.
Of all the great watches that watch collectors dream about, Paul Newman’s “Paul Newman Rolex” is likely at the top of many a list. The watch is expected to fetch well over $ 1 million in Phillip’s auction in New York City (its first ever in NYC) this Fall, but honestly who knows how high this baby could go!
Newman was often photographed wearing with the watch in the ’70s and early ‘80s, which prompted collectors to rename the model—Reference 6239 with a black, white and red “Exotic” dial—the Paul Newman Daytona. By the early ‘90s, a 6239 Paul Newman Daytona garnered about $ 10,000 at auction. In May 2016, the auction price for a later reference hit $ 2 million. Yet all collectors kept asking: ‘Where is Paul Newman’s Paul Newman?’ Turns out that Nell Newman’s close friend and former boyfriend James Cox had been wearing it nearly every day for decades without a second thought. WTF!
WSJ. Magazine has the details on how James ended up with the watch as a young man, why Nell’s charitable work inspired him to sell it after all of these years and what he thinks Paul Newman would say about the watch being auctioned>>>
