I Love Carbon Fiber, & I Think Willis Judd Knew That About Me

First, I want to acknowledge a reader for connecting Willis Judd and I. That was very cool, Mike, and I appreciate you sharing WYCA with the world.

Willis Judd has packed their inaugural creation with a lot of value: a Swiss-made Ronda 763 quartz movement powers timekeeping, sapphire is used for the raised and bevelled crystal, and each watch comes with two straps that feature a quick-release springbar (changing straps is as easy as it gets).

What a looker this watch is, too. The carbon fiber is well done and looks fantastic, but you know me… let’s let the photos do the talking!

One of the hardest things to capture in photography is how light plays with materials. Carbon fiber has a really great effect when lit with the right kind of lighting and I really wanted to capture that with this photo shoot.

As the angle of the watch in relation to the light source changes, so too does the dial. The textures are rich, and if you’re familiar with carbon fiber, you’ll appreciate the quality of the inlay on the dial. Suffice to say that it looks excellent, even under zoom- especially under zoom.

Willis Judd is Shipping Two Straps With Each Watch

With a lot of watches, the inclusion of a second strap is less of a draw than it sounds since most people don’t actually know how to change straps on their watches. However, Willis Judd has smartly chosen to use quick-release straps; a quick-release springbar in the strap makes swapping it out the strap for a new one a job that takes seconds and requires no tools.

Also, the straps look and feel great. The black on red carbon fiber strap that came attached to this carbon fiber beauty is comfortable and matches the aesthetic perfectly; the second included strap, a black cow-grain leather with a deep tan underside, feels luxurious and comfortable to wear.

What’s It Like On the Wrist? In a Word: Bulletproof

The PVD coating (AAA quality, by the way) and sapphire crystal make the watch quite durable. This is a good thing, as the crystal is bevelled and raised by about 1mm compared to the rest of the case. Were it mineral, I’d be worried.

It’s got good weight to it, but it doesn’t feel heavy. Despite its 45mm size, the extensive use of black and carbon fiber makes the Willis Judd wear smaller than it is. It will fit most men pretty well.

A project brought to life by two brothers, this carbon fiber watch is really something unique. The retail price is around $ 150 USD, though you can get them on kickstarter (until end of day tomorrow, anyway) for as low as $ 60 right now. Carbon Auto features a carbon-rich atmosphere for your timekeeping survival

Carbon Auto is a Kickstarter watch with a mission: to strap carbon fiber to every part of your body, starting with your wrist. The pieces are pretty cool-looking. They come in standard and “semi-skeletonized” and each model includes multiple straps. The crowdfunding effort has already hit $ 19,000 so they’re sure to ship and this is the second watch from the team.

Early bird models cost a mere $ 138 and come with two straps, a leather and a nylon. The watches are lumed and come in multiple colors as long as you’re OK with some permutation of black and silver.

These sorts of Kickstarters are actually really exciting. While a three-handed auto doesn’t always float my boat it’s amazing to me to see that hundreds of small manufacturers can create and sell cool watches on their own terms. This is a massively important change in the industry and one that I think will buoy the entire market.

Mr. Jones has the Last Laugh tattooed all over

The time has come to shuffle off this coil and follow the Pale Rider skyward. Mr. Jones Watches has never hesitated to deliver us Momento Mori, the reminder that we will die. John Biggs, our leader of fearful symmetry, never fails to remind me that watches are fashion items. With this in mind, Mr. Jones has the Last Laugh again– this time, sized for ladies.

We’ve covered many Mr. Jones Watches here, as recently as the Color Venn model a week ago. This model recalls earlier Mr. Jones models that have stuck in my mind, haunting me as the months turn to years. I can’t shake them, and I can’t forget. The first Mr. Jones watch I ever saw was The Accurate, whose hands read “remember” and “you will die”. It was powered by a Ronda quartz model. mr_jones_the_accurate

Then, the Last Laugh debuted, after some time, and it was powered by an automatic mechanical movement, an ST1721 20 jewel affair. It has a jump hour movement, so the hour changes in one moment, rather than progressively moving around the dial. The hours and minutes are written on the teeth of a skull, and shift at once. This was the man’s version, and it held nothing back, measuring in at 37mm, a sort of dressy, vintage large size. What makes today’s news most interesting is that we now have the Last Laugh available in a more modest 31mm, suitable for the thinner, more ladylike wrist. Not that a woman couldn’t choose to wear the 37mm – she can do whatever she wants, when she has the Last Laugh. Also available is the Last Laugh Tattoo edition, which is uses the skull symbol of the Mexican Day of the Dead, a holiday when the gates of Heaven are opened, and the spirits of the deceased reunite with their family members for 24 hours. The family members prepare festivities for them, and this is where the mask comes in. The point is to remember, and honor ones family members.
